A Day in the Life of a Personal Care Senior Living Community Resident
By Team Writer | June 12, 2024
Every resident of a senior living community should have the opportunity to live independently and still receive all the care they need. When a senior living community offers the option of personal care, residents can receive not only help with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing and toileting but also medication management and nursing care. Curious about what a typical day is like for a resident of a personal care senior living community? Find out below!
A personal care senior living community resident’s typical day
Rise and shine
Starting each day on the right foot is essential to aging well so morning routines are important. Each resident receives all the help they need with getting up, getting dressed and tending to personal hygiene tasks. In a personal care senior living community residents also receive their morning medications from licensed staff, which can include simply dispensing the right pills to helping with diabetes injections.
Morning activities
Next, residents head to the dining room for a nutritious breakfast where they can choose from a variety of menu options and, if needed, helpful staff will be right by their side to lend a hand. Breakfast is also a time for planning the day ahead, whether that includes participating in fun activities or events, medical care appointments or visiting with friends and family.
For example, residents may choose to join an exercise class, take a walk and enjoy the outdoors, work on a hobby or arts and crafts project, or check out a new book in the library. At Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky, we also offer our unique Artists in Residence program in partnership with the University of Louisville School of Music, which brings students on-site to live with residents and share their musical talents with the community.
Also on the agenda for many seniors in a personal care senior living community is tending to medical care priorities. With on-staff nurses, residents receive a range of services necessary to keep them healthy and independent. Each resident has a comprehensive care plan designed to address ongoing health concerns as well as changes that occur. Afternoon events
After a full morning, residents in personal care senior living communities look forward to lunchtime when they can enjoy an excellent meal and the camaraderie of friends and staff. Following lunch, some residents prefer to return to their apartments for medications, a quick nap or a call with family. For others, it’s a great time for a haircut and style in the on-site hair salon or barbershop or maybe a trip to town to shop is in order. Another option is to take advantage of other onsite amenities like spending time in the chapel, using the computers in the library, checking in at the Wellness Center to talk to a nurse, or helping out in the gardens.
For residents who need help recovering from an illness or injury afternoons may be spent getting the exact rehabilitation services they require to get back in the swing of things. Medical staff work with residents’ physicians to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy on-site or, when needed, will help residents attend other therapy sessions off-site.
Evening events
As the day ends, it’s time to wind down and prepare for the evening. Many residents receive medications at this time or wrap up other activities for the day. Dinner is another fun social event with a full menu of delicious options and time to relax and share highlights of the day.
Later residents may take advantage of a warm summer night to watch the sunset with friends, check the calendar for evening events, attend a worship service, or return to their apartment to watch a TV show, call a loved one, or visit with family who stopped by.
Winding down
As bedtime approaches caring staff arrive to dispense medications and help residents dress, wash and complete other personal tasks.
