What’s Included in the Cost of Senior Living?
By Team Writer | October 18, 2024
For older adults and their loved ones considering a move to a senior living community, one of the greatest concerns is cost. Different communities have different cost structures so it’s best to know upfront what’s included in the cost of senior living and what isn’t. Here are several key factors to keep in mind.
The big picture
Senior living communities will have one of several cost structures. As described in the seniorly.com article, “Understanding the Cost of Assisted Living,” some require substantial down payments or move-in fees and may also charge rent plus a monthly fee for care. In these communities, the cost of care may also change as a resident’s needs change so it’s best to request a written description of how and how often care costs are assessed.
Unlike for-profit senior living communities, Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky is a mission-based, not-for-profit organization with almost 80 years of service to seniors and their families. Our overriding goal is to help those in need live in a safe, secure, and loving environment that supports their health, independence, and overall quality of life. For more about our communities check out our Mission and Vision statement.
Cost of services
Senior living communities provide services their residents need to live well and enjoy a worry-free lifestyle. These range from maintenance and repair to housekeeping, laundry and linen services to transportation and medication management, depending upon the level of care and the individual needs of the resident. The costs for services are usually built into the monthly fees although some communities may charge ala cart fees for some services.
At Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky, we offer both short- and long-term care options that include assisted living basic health, respite care, and palliative care.
Assisted living basic health is like assisted living with the addition of access to licensed medical staff for medication management and nursing care. This enables residents to live independently while receiving the compassionate medical care needed to maintain good health and well-being.
Another level of care service is respite care, which is generally a short-term stay for seniors whose caregivers need a break. Many seniors also use respite care as a trial run to spend time in a senior living community and experience day-to-day life before they decide to make the move.
Best of all, at Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky our monthly fees are all-inclusive for each level of care so there are no surprises for residents and their families.
Cost of amenities
Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky provides its residents with diverse amenities as part of the package. Some amenities may come at an extra charge like transportation. Our residents enjoy fun, interesting, and engaging amenities every day like games, crafts, musical performances, exercise classes, movies, local outings, and faith-based activities that complement our residents’ needs and desires. At Presbyterian Homes of Kentucky our staff not only provide compassionate personalized care but take the time to get to know each resident so they can support them in living well and remaining healthy and independent. As noted in our blog, “How Assisted Living Basic Health Improves Quality of Life,” we also understand the importance of a socially engaged lifestyle that includes family, friends, and staff, and we work hard to ensure every resident always feels they are important and valued.
